Something weird happened to me the other day. I got that email that you can have tumblr send you when someone follows you, and if I’m not doing anything at the moment I’ll check out that person’s tumblr. When I checked out this person’s tumblr I saw that they had no posts at all. This is surprisingly common, some people just use tumblr to keep track of stuff and don’t bother tossing anything on the pile.
What made this so suprising to me was that this person was only following a little over twenty people. By comparison, I’m currently following five hundred sixteen different tumblrs. Nearly all the people this person are following are artists. Really really talented artists, most of them people I’ve been a fan of for a long time.
I can’t speak for anyone else, but when I follow someone the implication is “I don’t want to miss out on anything this person has to say. I want to know as soon as this person posts a piece of art or has some sort of insight or sees something they think is worth sharing.” Whoever this person is, they seem to feel that way about Kate Beaton, Rebecca Sugar, or Ovens, and god knows I agree.
They also feel that way about me and it’s so goddamned flattering.
Now for all I know it could just be some huge dork’s first week on tumblr and they’re only following me because they saw that comic with the dicks slapping together, but the bottom line is that there’s someone keeping a lists of artists they want to keep up with and I’m in it and I’m in good company.
I don’t mean to be self-congratulatory and I promise I’ll keep posts like this to a minimum so this doesn’t turn into my old livejournal or something. I have a terrible tendency to obsess over things that go wrong. This was just an unexpected piece of flattery and it’s the sort of thing I should make better note of. The important thing to take away from this is that there are over a hundred of you following my tumblr and I love each and every one of you for it.
