Video game site 1up.com has reinvented itself with a series of “Cover Stories” where they have a set topic or theme and put out a series of articles on the subject over the course of the week. This week’s subject is Gender, Sexuality and Video Games. After one day there are already a handful of articles that are absolutely worth reading, especially given the sort of stuff tumblr’s into. Jeremy Parish’s introduction provides the mission statement of the theme, and his Op-Ed on the difference between male and female heroes is a great pre-emptive strike against the argument of misandry being an equal to mysogany in games.
As much as I wanna dive into the issues I’m not going to do as well as they are so far so GO READ IT YOU CRUMBUMS.
ADDENDUM: The comments on the articles haven’t been nearly as bad as I expected but it might be worth remembering what they say about reading the bottom half of the internet.
Every frame of this movie is beautiful.
everything about dead leaves rules, including the special feature that’s a round-table with the directors where they’re all drunk
oh hey its the movie that sealed hiroyuki imaishi as one of my insiprations forever
Alright I wanna talk about something that’s fucking nuts about this show. The two main characters spend nearly the entire movie in their underwear, we watch them have sex, and one of the film’s big showdowns is a fight between two naked women, but at no point did I ever feel like Pandy or the warden were sexualized in some sort of shitty eschergirls sort of way.
I can’t nail down exactly what it is that feels that way to me. Part of it might be that since the whole thing is so frantic we never really get the chance to develop anyone too far, so she didn’t need too much put into her personality-wise to be equal to any other cast member, but I’d like to give the short a bit more credit than that. In fact now that I think about it I think she gets more lines of dialog than anyone else in the thing, even more than Retro.
Haha, now that I think about it, I always thought of this show as being a twin-lead but now I’m pretty sure that it’s just about Pandy and Retro’s just along for the ride.
I’m gonna go watch this on Netflix again I recommend you all do the same and we’ll all meet back here with our conclusions. I really want to know if someone can put this into words for me of if I’m just way off.
